Ladder League Ranking Math: Leapfrog vs. Elo vs. Mexicano
How different ranking models calculate movement, ratings, and standings across recreational sports leagues.
| Ranking Model | How Ratings Move | Best Sport & Group Fit | Good Game Buddy Automation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leapfrog Ladder | If a lower-ranked player challenges and defeats a higher-ranked player, the winner jumps directly to the loser's rung. The loser and everyone in between shifts down one position. | Tennis & Pickleball 1v1 Singles, Squash, Racquetball, Club Challenge Boards. | Instant automated rung swapping with no manual whiteboard updates. |
| Elo / DUPR Rating Math | Predictive statistical curve. Beating a heavily favored opponent awards large rating jumps; beating a lower-rated player awards minor rating increments. | Competitive club leagues, sanctioned tournament seeding, cross-club play. | Built-in DUPR CSV export + automated Elo rating calculations. |
| Mexicano Points Ladder | Cumulative point pools (e.g. 24 pts/game). After every round, players are sorted by total points and matched on courts with nearest ranking neighbors (#1 & #3 vs #2 & #4). | Padel & Pickleball rotating doubles social nights, weekly club mixers. | 1-tap auto-complement scoring + dynamic round-by-round re-pairing. |
How The Ladder Moves
Whether in a single 90-minute session or across an 8-week season, players naturally climb to their exact competitive level.
Court 1 (King Court)
Highest ranked players of the session battle for the top spot.
Court 2 (Challenger)
High-intensity transition court where any team can break through to the top.
Court 3 (Entry / Base)
Equal playtime court where emerging players build momentum and climb.
In doubles play, Good Game Buddy automatically splits partners after every round so players never get stuck with the same teammate.
How To Run A Multi-Week Ladder League
Most leagues run 4, 6, 8, or 10 weeks. Here is the exact friction-free playbook for organizing your Racquet Sports ladder without spreadsheet headaches.
Seed Your Week 1 Courts
Assign 4 players to each court (Court 1 = highest skill, Court 2 = intermediate, Court 3 = entry). If starting blind, you can randomize or run a quick Mexicano round where scores automatically seed the initial court rungs.
Run The Weekly Session
Players play a 3-game round-robin or King of the Court rotation on their assigned court. With 4 players on a court, each player partners with everyone else once. Every point scored counts toward individual standings.
Promote & Relegate For Next Week
At the end of the night, the top 1 or 2 finishers on each court advance up one court for the following week, while the lowest 1 or 2 finishers drop down one court. Court 1 winners hold the King Court.
Cumulative Season Leaderboard
Good Game Buddy's Recurring Series maintains an all-time leaderboard tracking total points, match wins, and point differentials over the entire 6 or 8 weeks. Crown your season champions effortlessly!
